"From Cartoons to Commissions and and back again ..."
The Original remit for 'The Rallyist' published in 2009 was to tell the numerous stories gathered over the years. As an Artist I found the best method to be cartooning. For the purpose of the stories cars were largely made up with perhaps a passing reference to current club rally cars. How ever following publication, requests followed for actual cars to be drawn in my style. Of course this required greater detail, resulting in an evolution in my own cartooning techniques. In time this new Style combining Commission detail and cartoon humour sparked the Creation of both Rallyist-Art and the publications of my new cartoon book, Rallyist Remastered.
The Cars
"There's more to creating a Rallyist Cartoon Car than you think"
The cars are part of the story. They are characters in their own right. If the story requires the car to be cornering at high speed, the suspension, the wheels, the tyres, the chassis angle all have to be true. Even the steering wheel (raised so you can see the drivers hands) plays a part. If they look wrong then the punch line could be lost and the reader will not be able to relate.
"Ah, Gone are the days with the driver open to the elements,
Shirt Blowing in the wind, No logos!"
Single seaters (Monoposto) racing cars are great but the drivers expression can be difficult to express. especially through a full face helmet deep in the car and the introduction of the Halo. A lot of work is therefore needed to get the head position just right. Saloon cars are thankfully just like Rallycars.
And then there' s the Logos. A bad recreated logo can throw the whole image on a actual car. As for a Cartoon car, well lets face it with out actual sponsorship I'm not gin to put it on my cars. Therefore for Rallyist I needed new Logos. It has been fun creating them and for some logos, they have just taken on a life of their own.

Bikes
You have to draw Bikes!!! I am often told ... Yes Bike, Bike cartoons.
Not Enough Wheels by Half! I reply.
Mmmmm, Not a bad Title for a Motor bike cartoon book though.
How about Power Boats
Everything is Possible.
Not Enough or No Wheels
Planes and Boats and Trains... Trains? Well I have been asked.
Thanks to the Dakar Rally and of course WRC the helicopter found its way into Rallyist Remastered with no Trouble. I suppose that could include The Isle Of Man TT .
Mmmmm, Just had a thought ... Drones!
Finally; Yes I have been asked about trains. They are on my 'To do list'.
It's just difficult to show them jumping or sliding!!
Rallyist-Art cartoons went on show to the public for the very first time at the 2007 Autosport International Show at the NEC Birmingham. The feedback was very positive, leading to the publication of The Rallyist 2009.
Once published request soon came in asking if I could recreate their cars in that cartoon style.
"Of Course I can".
From that Rallyist-Art was born.
